The club was formed in 1928 and exists to support the Lord Mayor, Alderman and Common Councilmen of the Billingsgate Ward in carrying out their duties on behalf of the Ward, and the City of London. Club events provide an opportunity to meet the representatives who influence the way the City operates. It is also a great way to get involved with the Civic and social activities of the area. See our <strong>Events<\/strong> section to see what we get up to.<\/p>\r\n<p>Billingsgate is one of the 25 Wards of the City of London. This small City Ward is situated on the north bank of the River Thames between London Bridge and Tower Bridge in the south-east of the Square Mile. For over 1,000 years, Billingsgate Ward has been the heart of London&#8217;s fish trade and has always been a lively place. Due to the vulgar language used in the raucous cries of the fishmongers, <strong>Billingsgate<\/strong> came to be used as a noun referring to coarse or foul language!<\/p>\r\n<p>The Ward is also home to the oldest continuously run sporting race in the world, the Doggetts\u2019 Race.<\/p>\r\n<h2>THE BILLINGSGATE STORY<\/h2>\r\n<table style=\"width: 1036px; border-image: initial; height: 299px; border: medium none currentcolor;\">\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td style=\"width: 60%; vertical-align: top; padding-right: 20px; border: none;\">\r\n<p>Billingsgate is best known for the fish market that operated in the Ward for over a thousand years and trading began there when the first fortified water gate was erected by Belinius who was king in 390 BC. It was originally known as Blynesgate and Byllynsgate and eventually Billingsgate. The Ward Club derives its badge from this, the Belini Porta. The Club also supports the Fish Harvest Festival at our parish church of St Mary-at-Hill, and a candle-lit Carol Service at the same church, followed by a Christmas dinner.
